Check quantities and specifications
Look for square metres, linear metres, material brands or grades, base depths, concrete strength where relevant, plant sizes and the number of gates or fixtures. Vague allowances make comparison difficult.
Read exclusions
Common exclusions can include rock excavation, hidden services, council fees, engineering, electrical work, additional soil removal or unexpected drainage. Exclusions are not automatically bad, but they must be understood.
Ask about sequencing
If several trades are involved, who prepares the site for the next stage? Who protects completed work? Who resolves level conflicts? A cheap individual quote can create extra cost elsewhere if interfaces are unclear.
Create one scope first
The cleanest comparison starts before the quotes arrive. Give each provider the same project brief, drawings, photos and assumptions. Then differences in price are easier to investigate.
